FeedForward - Barefoot & Naked

| On the basis of the cover it’s no hard guess what style FeedForward plays: Progressive rock / Metal. They have their handwork well under control, that’s for sure. In addition, this band distinguishes itself by front lady Biejanka, because to my knowledge there are few bands with female vocals in this genre. To label this band formed in 2002, I will start with mentioning the biggest influence of FeedForward: Dream Theater. To put it differently, the musicians consisting of guitarist, bassist, drummer and keyboard player seem to have listened a lot to "When Dream And Day Unite" of the New York progmasters. That unfortunately went so far, that even the fluffy sound (percussion) is copied. But that is only one small flaw. However, at least five of the ten songs are real prog-hits - such as "Fade Away" is standing out with its catchy Synths and subtle hardness, followed by the piano-dominated "Run The Race" (with soloduel between guitar / keyboard) or the simply delicious sounding piano ballad "Our Sky". Furthermore the Dutchmen score throughout the whole album by systematically alternating between keyboard-dominated songs and songs filled with more guitars, the latter turning out to be more aggressive as expected. Also interesting are the many unconventional melodies, which become more noticeable only after several listenings to "Barefoot & Naked", but then sound more vibrant with every spin. In the second half of the disc the Dream Theater influence becomes more obvious, as heard in "Silent", "Before I Leave" or the brilliant, 7 minutes long "moving", which should make the technical freaks among you happy. The final piece is formed by the excessive and branched "Stop To Think", which has a strong chorus. |
| Finally it must be said that FeedForward recorded an atmospheric album that despite the comparison still holds enough originality for them not to be labeled a clone. Speaking of which: Luckily I think singer Biejanka, who with her classical singing voice could be considered to belong to the "Nightwishtemptation" category complete with wedding dress, chose for a different musical career. Namely she makes, without underestimating the technical qualities of her band members, really something special of the music of FeedForward! |
